Alla Prima Still-Life: Colour and Light - Megan Ellen MacDonald

flower1.jpg

In this 12 week painting course course with Megan Ellen MacDonald, students will be taught to assess and describe the light, form, and colour of subject matter through a direct painting approach in oil. This course will emphasize the importance of understanding value and colour design in painting, and build student’s foundational painting skills through shape design, colour mixing, and mark making.

The course will begin with students building a fundamental understanding of value, form, and colour through short exercises from life. Megan will demonstrate how to simplify and model forms, assess and mix colour accurately, and compose with value. Students should be able to effectively model form and create convincing light and colour on the picture plane within the first half of the course. Emphasis will be placed on chroma-control and accurate visual representation of various planes as it relates to the texture and surface quality of the subject.

In the latter half of the course, Megan will introduce more dynamic subject matter and push students to create a single, dynamically composed alla prima painting in each session. Megan will show students various ways to create interesting and layered mark making on a wet painting surface, and how to control edges and design better shapes on the picture-plane. By the end of the course, students will have a good understanding of how to effectively work from observation in a single sitting, and be able to create confident brushwork and harmonious colour in their paintings.

12 weeks:
Tuesday Evenings 6:30pm - 9:30pm
September 10th - November 26th 2019

*A list of materials will be sent 2 weeks before the start date.

"Megan Ellen MacDonald is a Canadian artist working and living in Toronto. Her work – informed by classical painting traditions and techniques - challenges pre-established aesthetic hierarchies by creating a visual language out of things considered both diminutive and feminine.
