Outdoor Painting & Figures - Keita Morimoto (Weekly Class)

This Outdoor Painting & Figures class is designed for artists at all levels who would like to learn processes and essential painting tools to create visually impactful and comprehensible en plein air paintings in a couple of hours as well as more immersive scenes with figurative elements. There will be a few weeks of painting from various sceneries of Toronto as well as other weeks of painting with a model in various outdoor locations.

There will be strong emphasis on paint application, atmospheric perspective, and compositional elements of painting such as line, movement, pattern, shape, size, value and colour. The class will include demos, and one-on-one feedback with each student.

Students are advised to be equipped with an outdoor easel, however, may choose to work on sketchbooks as well. All of these mediums are accepted: oil, acrylic, gouache, or watercolour. Demos will be done in oil and acrylic gouache.

8 Weeks: 
September 13 - November 1st 2020
Sundays 9am - 1pm (4 Hours)

"Keita Morimoto is a painter working in Toronto, Ontario. Morimoto was born and raised in Osaka, Japan, and moved to Toronto in 2008 in order to pursue a post secondary eduction at OCADU. He has exhibited his work in several group shows around Toronto, Tokyo, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, as well as participated in a number of charity auction events to raise money for Japan relief after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Morimoto has recently mounted a solo exhibition in the Media/Retail Space of Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art. His work has also been included in the 2014 collection of Art with Heart Auction at Casey House."


Professional & Private Mentorship - Keita Morimoto
*This class is limited to only 5 students max. after portfolio reviews*

This private mentorship program with Keita Morimoto will run for 14 weeks from September all the way until December. This is only for students who are serious about pursuing professional career as a painter or drawer.

Here's a list of exclusive contents you can get in this program:

  • 7-hour sessions every week from 1 - 8pm (98 hours of mentoring compared to a regular 12-week class of 36 hours)

  • A lot of one-on-one feedback and private coaching

  • Working alongside the instructor in his own studio

  • Demonstration of the entire painting process from start to finish which includes:

    • How to generate ideas and themes from scratch

    • Making references from photo shooting to digital editing

    • How to paint using these references effectively

    • Various processes and methods of underpainting / indirect painting / direct painting

    • Varnishing and finishing

  • How to prepare different surfaces for small to large paintings

  • How to document works professionally

  • At anytime, Q&As regarding the career and exhibitions

  • And MANY MORE AS REQUESTED

14 weeks: (7 hours every week)
Saturday Afternoons 1pm - 8pm at the artist’s private studio (Dinner breaks at 5pm)

*Students who have already enrolled in Studio West courses will be prioritized. Upon acceptance, we will send you a link to complete your registration. At this time, we will require a minimum deposit of 1200 CAD + HST. The remainder will be due August 29th.

"Keita Morimoto is a painter who moved to Canada from Osaka, Japan in 2006. Before and after graduating from OCAD University in 2012, Morimoto’s work has been exhibited in New York, Denver, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Indiana, Berlin, Portland, San Francisco, Miami, Montréal, Peterborough as well as Toronto. He has mounted six solo exhibitions including one museum solo exhibition at Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art as well as being a finalist in 2016 RBC Painting Competition. He has also participated in charity auctions including Art with Heart to support HIV care and Artists Help Japan for tsunami relief. He is now represented by Nicholas Metivier Gallery in Toronto."

Weekly Class Cancellation Policy

  • If Studio West cancels a class, student will receive 100% refund.

  • Students may cancel more than four weeks before start and receive a partial refund

  • Cancel five days or fewer start date: 0% refund, but credits may be given under extenuating circumstances

No refund or credit is given for student absences during the course of the workshop.
